The dress, sewn for a 6-year-old out of red gingham, was purchased at Junior Towne in 1969 or so. It had a Peter Pan collar, puff sleeves, a bow in the back and several layers of ruffled skirting. Hidden in the ruffles, tied with a tiny bow, was one silver bell.
"It was a totally secret, seductive, charming thing," said Marta Lastufka, who wore the dress as a girl in Anchorage. Maybe it was a first pair of shoes, or a silver cup, or a piano recital dress. Maybe it was potty training advice or a last-minute gift sent by air to an Aleutian village. Ask around to most anybody who has been a child or had a child in Anchorage over the last 55 years, and many will have a story like Lastufka's. Junior Towne has been outfitting the children of Anchorage in tiny wedding tuxedos, christening gowns, communion veils, bassinets, school uniforms, Baby Bjorns and pee-pee teepees since 1956. But this summer, the store, in its signature pink-and-blue cinder-block building on Fireweed Lane, will close. Junior Towne weathered the 1964 earthquake, the decline and renewal of the Spenard Road strip, and decades of competition, including from big-box baby stores such as Target and Babies "R" Us. Business is still just fine. But Lynn Brautigam Boots, who took over the store from her mother, Esther Brautigam, 32 years ago, would simply like to retire. If she thought there was somebody enthusiastic who understood the business philosophy and wanted to take it on, she might have sold it. But the right person didn't appear. "We'd rather go out on top," she said.
