Sponsored by
the textiles ministry, Fashion Design Promotion Council (FDPC) has proposed the
hub with the aim of making India a fashion destination by capitalizing on the
potential and creativity of the country's designers.
"The primary objective of the FDPC is to bridge the gap in development within
the fashion industry by taking support from the government. I think that there
is a need to create a demarcated zone where all Indian designers are present
throughout the year and buyers from all over the world can visit anytime"" FDPC
Secretary and CEO Vijay Singh said in a statement Wednesday.
The Delhi
Development Aunthority (DDA) has already demarcated 10 acres in Maidan Garhi in
south Delhi for the proposed fashion hub, work on which is expected to begin in
the current financial year.

The proposed hub will be under the
administrative control of the textiles ministry through a public private
partnership, as suggested by the Planning Commission.
"This public
private partnership will ensure speedy execution of this large scale project. It
will enable the coming together of the government and the fashion industry""
Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI) President Sunil Sethi said.
If
everything goes according to plan, the proposed hub will host fashion shows
during all seasons, have permanent exhibition centres, conduct research on
products and manufacturers, organise fashion photo shoots, produce publicity
material and literature on a wide range of fashion business related issues, and
will also have a textile and crafts museum, guest rooms, fitness centres and
much more.
Speaking about the initiative, FDPC vice president Raghavendra
Rathore said:""We stand for a united fashion industry and a fashion hub is more
than what we have bargained for. Kudos to the forward thinking textile
ministry""

Hearing about the new initiative, designer Jai of the
Parvesh-Jai duo said it would broaden the spectrum of the Indian fashion
industry.
"Creating a fashion hub is a wonderful idea and with the
support of the government, it means a lot. We hope it is executed as soon as
possible"" Jai told IANS.
"This will broaden the spectrum of the Indian
fashion fraternity in every sense and will take Indian fashion to a different
level altogether. This is a real nice futuristic approach"" he maintained.
